I’ve been a long-time user of Night Shift on Apple devices. Recently, I realized I prefer the display’s color shift all day, not just at night. While this might not be ideal for everyone, I find it comfortable and barely noticeable.
Night Shift automatically shifts the colors of your display to the warmer end of the color spectrum after dark.
Studies have shown that exposure to bright blue light in the evening can affect your circadian rhythms and make it harder to fall asleep. Night Shift uses your computer’s clock and geolocation to determine when it’s sunset in your location. It then automatically shifts the colors in your display to the warmer end of the spectrum. In the morning it returns the display to its regular settings.
Unfortunately, there’s no direct way to enable Night Shift continuously in settings. You can only schedule it for specific times or sunset to sunrise.
Here’s a workaround for macOS:
- Go to
System Settings
>Displays
>Night Shift
. - Set the schedule to
Custom
. - Change the time range to
3:00
AM to2:59
AM.
Since I don’t use my computer at night, the brief interruption at 2:59 AM
is unnoticeable.
This isn’t the most elegant solution, but it works. Hopefully, Apple will add a dedicated “All Day” option in the future.
The process is similar for iOS:
- Go to
Settings
>Display & Brightness
>Night Shift
. - Set the schedule to
Custom Schedule
and adjust the times as described above.
Protecting your eyes is crucial, especially with prolonged screen time.
